LAURIE NELKIN
by Malcolm E. Wright
Laurie Nelkin died on 22nd August 1994. On the Saturday he was not well and was taken to hospital, but on the Sunday he returned home. On the Monday afternoon he fell and hit his head and died from a pulmonary embolism. His sister, who was in Tibet at the time, returned home on the Friday. I didnt learn of his death until I returned from holiday. It was a great shock. The funeral was on September 9th, 3pm, at Sutton Road Crematorium, Southend-on-Sea. I went to his funeral. It was a good one. Laurie was very recognisable from the words that were spoken about him. He had been a good friend, much loved by those that knew him at Southend Poetry Group and local folk clubs. He was a great performer of dramatic poetry. A number of his poems were published in the Southend Poetry Group anthologies.
